Concrete is one of the most durable surfaces known to man. By mechanically refining the surface of concrete by grinding, polishing and chemical treatment, we can bring the surface to a whole new level of beauty functionality and strength. With different specified processes, a floor solution can be tailored to fit any requirement- aesthetic, flatness, gloss and price. At Mclean Flooring we provide a wide range of concrete polishing options and if polishing cannot be accomplished we work with you to find an alternative solution for your concrete floor.

Steps in the Concrete Polishing Process:

Grind (exposing aggregate):

The concrete floor is first ground to establish the required flatness and/or aggregate exposure. This also removes what is in many cases the softer, unstable surface layer of concrete. A flatter floor makes for higher light reflectivity. Grinding will also take off the epoxy coatings, paint or glues from previous flooring.

Fill

Small holes, air bubbles and other small surface imperfections are filled using a latex grout to ensure a smooth, uniform surface. For large spalls, cracks or expansion joints there are a range of polyurea fillers and repair products that can be colored to match your existing floor.

Densification

The surface of the concrete is then treated with a water-based concrete hardener. This produces a homogenously hardened surface and creates a non-dusting floor. Potassium based densifiers are traditionally used for exposed aggregate floors, and lithium-based densifier for color treated or cream/paste polished floors.

Polish:

Polishing is the finer stage of the process where we use resin bonded diamond tools to achieve the desired surface smooth surface and gloss. Light meter testing is performed after polishing but before applying a protective coating. This ensures proper calcium silicate creation and correct execution of the polishing process.

Protect:

A stain and wear resistant finish coat is then applied to the floor which gives the concrete durability and makes it easy to clean.

Benefits:

Environmentally sensible

Concrete polishing is the smart choice to reduce environmental impact. The process transforms existing concrete substrates into wear-resistant floors. The process incorporates the use of products that cause very little environmental impact.

Hard and Resistant

With the Polished Concrete method, we take an already hard material and increase the surface density and abrasion resistance to a level where the concrete is extremely resistant to wear and marking.

Durable and Cost Efficient

Concrete polishing significantly reduces the life cycle maintenance costs. The absence of a surface coating reduces cost traditionally associated with flooring installations. The result is a smoother surface with reduced cleaning costs.

Light Reflective

In addition to reduced maintenance costs, there is also the added benefit of reduced lighting requirements, a result of the higher light reflectivity of the surface.
